Introduction

The Ministry of Health is committed to providing Quality Health care to the people of Zambia as close to their families as possible. In order to realise this Vision, the Government of the Republic of Zambia, through the Ministry of Health embarked on a rigorous program to construct Health Care facilities and recruit health care staff. Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital reflects Governments committment to fulfilling the Vision.

 

Our Story

The Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital (LMUTH) is situated on Great East Road, Chainama Hills Area in Lusaka. The hospital is manned by approximately 1528 medical and administrative personnel. This facility therefore functions as a University Teaching Hospital within a catchment area of eight (08) districts. These are Chilanga, Chirundu, Chongwe, Kafue, Luangwa, Lusaka, Rufunsa and Shibuyunji with an estimated population of more than 3.5 million people (CSO's projection report, 2018).

The hospital was officially opened on 8th August, 2011 as Lusaka General Hospital. Later in the year, the hospital's name was changed to Levy Mwanawasa General Hospital in memory of Zambia's third President, Levy Patrick Mwanawasa. With the modernisation of health facilities in the county, the hospital was on June 6, 2017 upgraded to a tertiary hospital to be part of the Levy Mwanawasa Medical University (LMMU) which at the time, was under construction. It was renamed Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital, in line with its expanded functions. The Hospital has a current bed capacity of 1100.

Integration into LMMU

LMUTH is part the Levy Mwanawasa Medical University (LMMU) that was established as a Public University on 22nd May, 2018 under provisions of Section 132 of the Higher Education Act No. 4 of 2013 by way of Statutory Instrument No. 39 and 40 of 2018. At its establishment, the University became the fourth Public University offering health programs and the largest purpose-built heath training institution offering health profession's education and training in Zambia.

 

Expansion of LMUTH

With its on-going robust program of constructing, rehabilitating and upgrading health facilities across the country, the Zambian Government with the support from the Chinese Government has expanded LMUTH to a 1100 bed capacity health facility. The New state-of-the-art LMUTH brings on board specialised medical services with avant-garde medical equipment suitable for a practicum site College and University students.

 

 

Health Provision

LMUTH is a Patient-focused institution offering specialised and general services under four major Clinical disciplines namely, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Internal Medicine and Surgry. Each of these departments is headed by a specialist with unrivaled experience in their fields. These clinical departments are backed by high-performance support Units of Laboratory, Radiology (X-ray), Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, Environmental Health, Biomedicine and other related paramedical disciplines.

The hospital also has administrative units that equally offer incomparable services towards the running of the institution. The include: Human Resources, Accounts, Engineering, Health Information, Public Relations, Social Work, Nutrition, Purchasing, Security, Information Technology (IT), planning, General Administration and Audit.

LMUTH offers services in two broad categories namely: standard services and premium services. Premium services are optional and attract higher costs on services provided to a patient. Facilities and services at the hospital are distributed by specialty that includes:

An active 24-hour Out-patient and In-patient service.

The provision of health services at the hospital is anchored on its Mission Statement.
