LMUTH Successfully Performs Collaborative Surgery on Rare Congenital Condition

Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital (LMUTH) successfully performed a specialized collaborative surgery on 25th March 2026 to treat a 25-year-old female patient diagnosed with a rare congenital condition known as persistent patent urachus.

The procedure was carried out by a team of Urologists and General Surgeons, highlighting the hospital’s strong multidisciplinary approach to patient care. A persistent patent urachus occurs when a structure that normally closes before birth remains open, creating an abnormal connection between the bladder and the umbilicus (belly button). If left untreated, the condition can lead to infections and other complications.
The surgery involved the successful removal of the abnormal tract, and the patient is currently recovering well under medical supervision.

The Team
This achievement reflects LMUTH’s growing capacity to manage complex medical conditions locally and demonstrates the Government of Zambia’s continued commitment to strengthening healthcare services, ensuring citizens have access to quality treatment at minimal cost.
LMUTH remains dedicated to delivering safe, specialized, and patient-centered healthcare services to the nation.
