History Behind Zambia’s National Doctors’ Day
Zambia commemorated the inaugural National Doctors’ Day on 16th March 2025 in Lusaka, marking the beginning of an annual celebration dedicated to recognizing the invaluable contribution of medical doctors to the nation’s healthcare system and the journey toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
Historically, the day also reflects an important milestone in 1966, when Zambia, in the early years after independence, began producing its own indigenous medical doctors. This achievement symbolized the country’s commitment to building local medical capacity and ensuring that quality healthcare services are delivered closer to communities across the nation.
National Doctors’ Day therefore serves as a reminder that today’s medical professionals continue the vision of the country’s pioneers to expand healthcare access and ensure that no one is left behind.
During this day, doctors across the country participate in various activities such as community health awareness campaigns, medical check-ups, and physical fitness activities, all aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles and raising awareness about Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).
The 2026 theme, “Celebrating Excellence Through Collective Impact in Healthcare,” highlights the importance of collaboration in achieving quality healthcare outcomes. Excellence in the health sector remains a key priority outlined in the 2022–2026 National Health Strategic Plan, and meaningful progress can only be achieved through strong partnerships, including Public–Private Partnerships (PPPs).
Above all, National Doctors’ Day is a celebration of hard work, resilience, sacrifice, and compassion demonstrated by medical doctors who dedicate their lives to saving others.
Happy National Doctors’ Day to all senior, fellow, and junior colleagues.
