Successful Surgical Tooth Extraction at LMUTH Dental Department

On Thursday, 3rd April 2026, the Dental Team at Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital (LMUTH) successfully conducted a complex surgical tooth extraction, demonstrating the hospital’s capacity to manage challenging dental cases using safe and evidence-based techniques.
The patient presented with a grossly carious (severely decayed) tooth that was surrounded by very dense bone, making routine extraction difficult. Due to the extensive decay, the tooth structure had become brittle, causing it to repeatedly fracture during initial removal attempts. Additionally, the roots of the tooth were curved inward, making the tooth firmly anchored within the bone and further complicating the procedure.
Given these complexities, the dental team proceeded with a surgical extraction, which is the recommended approach in situations where conventional extraction methods are not feasible or safe.
The Surgical Procedure

SURGICAL PROCEDURE
The procedure involved careful planning and precision to ensure patient safety and successful removal of the tooth. Key steps included:
Raising a surgical flap to expose the affected tooth and surrounding structures
Removing a small portion of the surrounding bone to gain adequate access
Carefully extracting the tooth, taking into account the inward-curving roots and strong anchorage
Ensuring proper closure of the surgical site to support healing
The procedure was completed successfully, and the patient is currently recovering well under routine post-operative care.

MEDICAL PROCEDURE
Commitment to Specialized Dental Care
This successful procedure highlights the expertise and dedication of the LMUTH Dental Team in managing complex dental conditions. Surgical extractions are often necessary in cases involving:
Severely decayed or broken teeth
Teeth with curved or unusually shaped roots
Teeth embedded in dense bone
Situations where routine extraction poses a risk of complications
At Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital, we remain committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centered dental services, supported by modern techniques, skilled professionals, and a strong focus on patient safety.
Patients are encouraged to seek early dental care to prevent complications associated with severe tooth decay and to maintain good oral health.
